About the UCU
The UCU was formed on 1st June 2006 by the amalgamation of two unions, NATFHE
and AUT, becoming the largest union for the representation of academic and academic
related university and college staff in the UK. The two former NATFHE and AUT
memberships at UWE were merged into a single branch with around 630 members,
creating one of the largest branches UCU branches at any UK university.
The union exists to negotiate on behalf of its members and to offer support
and assistance where necessary, but in addition, it also acts as a monitor ensuring
that universities follow all the necessary legal and negotiated steps in their
working practices. For example, when Keele University attempted to by-pass normal
consultation procedures to close down a world renowned school, it was an intervention
by the local UCU branch to the university's visitor which prevented these plans
from going ahead.
